How to honour paper without giving paper

If you would rather skip the tradition

Nobody checks. The first anniversary is really about marking that the year happened, and the pieces that do that best are dated: a plaque with the wedding date, a memory box for the year's accumulated clutter, or a milestone block with the number one on it, which starts a series you can continue.

The wine box trick

If you were given a personalized wine box at the wedding with “open on your first anniversary” engraved on the lid, this is the day it pays off. If you were not, buy one now engraved for the fifth. Gifts that arrive on a delay are disproportionately well remembered.

Budget

First anniversaries do not need to be expensive - the wedding was expensive enough. Something in the range of a good dinner out, with the right date on it, is the sweet spot. Spend the effort on the engraving rather than the total.
